Kick-ass skiing in Golden

Kick-ass skiing in Golden

They call it champagne powder – the average annual 7 m (23 ft) of fluffy snow that falls on Kicking Horse Mountain Resort, in British Columbia’s Purcell Mountains. Off-piste adventures (heli- and cat-skiing are popular) have made Kicking Horse a favorite among downhill enthusiasts. No wonder: The resort has one of the highest vertical drops on the continent while its après-ski action is refreshingly low-key. The terrain favors the advanced skier, but with a private instructor many skiers can enjoy the hills.

What else to do: Stay in the hotel suite tucked above Eagle’s Eye Restaurant, the highest-altitude restaurant in the country, perched at 2,348 m (7,705 ft) – if only for the 24-hour butler.

Snowshoeing near the Great Divide at Lake Louise

Snowshoeing near the Great Divide at Lake Louise

There are a couple ways to see the Continental Divide in the Rocky Mountains. One is through the picture windows of The Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise as you sip an English-style afternoon tea. The more adventurous can snowshoe along trails overlooking the Great Divide with the Fairmont’s resident mountain guides, who camp out in a backwoods-style cabin at the hotel.

What else to do: Book a guided ice walk down nearby Johnston Canyon with Sun Dog Tours, or take part in Chateau Lake Louise’s winter activities (anyone for Bavarian curling?)

Patricia Gajo

With boutique properties in four Canadian cities, hotelier Christiane Germain talks about where to dine and shop from coast to coast. Let her direct you to restaurants such as Charcut in Calgary, where you can tuck into house-cured charcuterie, or Victor, in Toronto, where the tasting menu pays homage to the city’s ethnic neighborhoods. For shopping, be prepared to try on the chicest Montréal prêt-à-porter finds.
